The primary objective of Apollo 11 was to complete a national goal set by President John F. Kennedy on May 25, 1961to perform a crewed lunar landing and return to Earth. Apollo 11 launched July 16, 1969 and landed back on Earth on July 24, 1969.

The photograph is close-up view of an astronaut’s footprint in the lunar soil, taken with a 70mm lunar surface camera during the Apollo 11 extravehicular activity (EVA) on the moon.  The footprint image represented man’s interaction with the lunar landscape.
While astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Commander, and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., Lunar Module Pilot, descended in the Lunar Module (LM) “Eagle” to explore the Sea of Tranquility region of the moon, astronaut Michael Collins, Command Module Pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) “Columbia” in lunar orbit.
