The iconic Earthrise photograph was captured by astronaut William Anders on December 24, 1968, during NASA’s Apollo 8 mission. During their fourth orbit around the Moon, Mission Commander Frank Borman manoeuvred the spacecraft to help navigator Jim Lovell take landmark sightings. As the capsule turned, Anders suddenly saw the bright blue and white Earth emerging in his side window.

“Oh my God! Look at that picture over there! There’s the Earth coming up. Wow, that’s pretty,” Anders exclaimed. He quickly grabbed a Hasselblad camera loaded with colour film and captured the image. The photo is widely credited with sparking the modern environmental movement.

By showing our planet as a fragile, vibrant, and isolated blue marble suspended in the darkness of space, Earthrise gave humanity a profound new perspective on our shared home. In 2018, the International Astronomical Union commemorated the historic achievement by naming a 25-mile-wide crater on the lunar surface “Anders’ Earthrise”.
